Built for connection but drifting apart: why connection matters more than ever this Mental Health Month

1 October 2026

Today marks the beginning of Mental Health Month, and this year's national theme, Together We Thrive, highlights the critical role that connection, belonging and community play in mental health and wellbeing.

Mental Health Australia has released new research today that reveals a growing connection gap across the country. It found while many people continue to recognise the importance of connection for good mental health, they’re feeling less connected in their everyday lives.

The research found that nearly two-thirds of people (64%) believe we're becoming more disconnected from each other, while three in 10 (30%) feel less connected to others than they did 10 years ago.

At the same time, the findings show we clearly understand the value of connection. More than half (57%) say feeling included and part of something bigger than themselves helps them cope during stressful times, while 64% say feeling connected and having a sense of belonging positively impacts their mental health.

What this tells us is that people haven't stopped believing in the value of connection. The challenge is that many of us are experiencing less of it.

That's concerning because connection is an important protective factor for good mental health. As we navigate rising costs, interest rate rises and housing stress, uncertainty and increasing pressures in daily life, fostering connection and belonging has never been more important.

This Mental Health Month, let's remember that small moments of connection can make a big difference. Building connected, inclusive and supportive communities sits with all of us.
