Strategy 2024 - 2029

Mental Health Australia’s vision is for mentally healthy people, mentally healthy communities.

We are  the national, independent peak body for the mental health sector. We unite the voices of the mental health sector and advocate for policies that improve mental health.

We have two strategic goals:

1) Driving better mental health policies and systems

2) Uniting and strengthening the mental health sector.

Statements

Our statements highlight key areas for mental health reform and offer practical paths forward for government action. We develop statements on issues of importance to the community and mental health sector, in collaboration with members and other stakeholders.

These statements are intended to influence particular government decision making processes.

Submissions

Mental Health Australia develops and advocates for practical policy solutions – which draw on:

  • The expertise of Mental Health Australia members – including clinicians, service providers, researchers and representative groups; lived experience peak bodies; and people with lived and living experience of mental ill-health, family, carers and supporters; all of whom represent a diversity and breadth of needs and experiences;
  • Evidence and insights from research, data, and practice;
  • What is currently working well, and insights from on-the-ground reform implementation; and
  • Our in-depth understanding of government policy and political decision-making processes.

Lived Experience Publications

Each year Mental Health Australia (MHA) hosts an Annual Issues and Opportunities Workshop attended by members of the National Register of Mental Health Consumer and Carer Representatives (National Register) and the National Mental Health Consumer and Carer Forum (NMHCCF) and the Lived Experience Group from the National Multicultural Mental Health Project (Embrace).

These two-day workshops aim to further develop the representative skills of mental health consumers and carers already participating in national policy initiatives. In particular, the workshops are designed to develop representatives’ advocacy, policy development and leadership skills. They also provide an opportunity to discuss national issues important to mental health consumers and carers, as well as network and share representative experiences.
